The recent U.S. withdrawal of military forces from Afghanistan and subsequent Taliban takeover of the country has created an environment in which terrorist groups have a permissive territory from which they can operate. The current environment in Afghanistan is reminiscent of the pre-9/11 era when the Taliban also held power in the country and may indicate the beginning of a new era of transnational terrorism
